This year at SIHH, Panerai has focused on new materials and technological innovation for the Lab-ID Luminor 1950 Carbotech 3 Days in 49mm. This watch is extremely technically advanced; there are no oils or liquid lubricants of any kind. So what is this watch and how is it possible? Well, the Carbotech case measures 49mm in diameter though it's very light and has a matte finish. The sandwich dial has a coating of carbon nanotubes on the dial, which almost entirely absorbs all the light that hits it, making it extremely black. The dial and hands are lit up with blue Super-LumiNova and since you cannot print on the nanotube-coating, the words "Luminor Panerai" and LAB-ID are printed directly on the crystal. About that dial: there's a material called Vantablack, which has been getting a lot of coverage lately. It's "the blackest substance on earth" and it consists of an array of vertically oriented carbon nanotubes. Vantablack absorbs as much as 99.

Panerai is celebrating its lasting relationship with the sport of classic yacht racing by releasing three automatic flyback chronographs equipped with a set of functions directly connected to the nautical world. The so-called PCYC (Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge) chronos offer three slightly different takes on the form though, so let’s take a quick look at what makes each new model special. Which one do you prefer to?  A or B? A:  Pamerai PAM00111 A very close runner-up would be the PAM00111. Now, the 111 is a Luminor Marina, as opposed to a Luminor Base, which means it has a small seconds hand at 9 O’Clock. Aside from that, it is really the same as a 112. I prefer base dials, but a seconds hand can be useful. Never worry about the strap on a PAM because they can be changed so easily and there are so many gorgeous options for any PAM. When buying a PAM, focus on the piece itself and find your ideal strap later. B: Pamerai PAM 00359 The Panerai PAM00359 is a well rounded substantial watch model that 1:1 features the brand’s famous P.9001 inhouse movement. It displays functions such as a power reserve display, a return-to-zero mechanism for the seconds hand triggered when the crown is pulled into the hand-setting position and a second time zone. The Panerai PAM127  is the watch which will drive the first serious wedge . An attempt to replicate the Luminor 6152 from the 50’s-60’s, it will revisit the main characteristics of the vintage Luminors. If the big domed sapphire impressed the whole field at the presentation of this model, it is not this feature of the PAM127 that made history. It is the return to the ogival middles, akin to those of the Radiomirs, out with the straight middles, to give way to a kind of quaint elegance, a salvation design that lightens the look of this big watch (47mm instead of the usual 44). Its real commercial success, on the second hand market, followed the success curves of the PAM203 and PAM233. The prestige of the PAM203 made the PAM127 more desirable.
